Medicare levy
Most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. Singles on low incomes pay less: nothing up to $28,011, then 10 cents for each dollar above that until the full 2% applies at $35,013. These are the latest legislated thresholds. The 2026–27 thresholds will be set later, and we'll update the calculator when they are. Families and seniors have higher thresholds.
High earners without private hospital cover may also pay the Medicare levy surcharge, which this calculator doesn't include.
HELP and study loan repayments for 2026–27
| Repayment income | Compulsory repayment |
|---|---|
| $0 – $69,528 | Nil |
| $69,529 – $129,717 | 15c for each $1 over $69,528 |
| $129,718 – $186,050 | $9,028 plus 17c for each $1 over $129,717 |
| $186,051 and over | 10% of total repayment income |
Repayment income can include reportable fringe benefits, net investment losses and reportable super contributions. The calculator assumes it equals your salary.
Superannuation
From 1 July 2025 the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. For 2026–27 the maximum contribution base is $270,830 a year, so super guarantee is capped at about $32,500.
Package example. A $112,000 package that includes super is a $100,000 salary plus $12,000 super. Tick "My salary includes super" and the calculator works this out for you.
Common questions
How much tax will I pay on $100,000 in 2026–27?
An Australian resident earning $100,000 pays $20,520 income tax plus a $2,000 Medicare levy, so take-home pay is $77,480 a year, about $6,457 a month or $2,980 a fortnight. Your employer also pays $12,000 super on top.
What changed in the 2026–27 tax brackets?
From 1 July 2026 the tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 fell from 16% to 15%. Everyone earning over $45,000 saves $268 a year compared with 2025–26. The other rates (30%, 37% and 45%) and the $18,200 tax-free threshold didn't change.
Is super included in my salary?
It depends on your contract. Most salaries are quoted plus super, so super is paid on top. If your offer is a 'package' or 'total remuneration' that includes super, tick the 'My salary includes super' box and the calculator works out your base salary first.
What is the Medicare levy?
A 2% levy on taxable income that helps fund Medicare. People on low incomes pay less or nothing. This calculator uses the latest legislated low-income thresholds for singles ($28,011 to $35,013), as the 2026–27 thresholds haven't been set yet.
How are HELP repayments worked out in 2026–27?
Repayments start once your repayment income passes $69,528. You repay 15 cents for each dollar between $69,528 and $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17 cents per dollar up to $186,050. Above that, the repayment is 10% of your whole repayment income.
Why is my payslip slightly different from this result?
Your employer withholds tax using the ATO's pay-as-you-go tables, which are designed to roughly match your yearly tax. This calculator shows your actual yearly tax, so small differences each pay are normal and usually even out at tax time.
What is the low income tax offset?
A tax offset of up to $700 for people earning $37,500 or less. It reduces gradually and stops at $66,667. The calculator applies it automatically.
Does this work for foreign residents or working holiday makers?
No. It uses resident tax rates, including the $18,200 tax-free threshold. Foreign residents and working holiday makers have different rates.
