What land tax is
Land tax is a yearly state tax on the value of land you own, other than your home. It mostly affects property investors, holiday home owners and owners of vacant or commercial land. Each state sets its own threshold, rates and assessment date, and most add up all the land you own in that state before applying the rates.
Because thresholds apply per state, owning one property in each of two states often means less land tax than owning both in the same state.
