How much super is enough?
The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) estimates that a single homeowner needs about $630,000 at 67 for a "comfortable" retirement, and a couple about $730,000, assuming a part Age Pension. For a "modest" retirement, it's about $110,000 for a single and $120,000 for a couple. These figures were updated in March 2026.
Ways to boost your super
- Salary sacrifice: before-tax contributions are taxed at 15% instead of your marginal rate, up to the $32,500 cap including your employer's 12%. See the salary sacrifice calculator.
- Check your fees: a 1% difference in fees can mean tens of thousands less at retirement.
- Consolidate accounts: multiple super accounts mean multiple sets of fees.
- Government co-contribution: lower-income earners who make after-tax contributions may get up to $500 from the government.
Assumptions and limits
Employer contributions are 12% of your salary, taxed at 15% going in, as are salary sacrifice contributions. The return you enter is applied after investment fees and earnings tax. "Today's dollars" adjusts for inflation so you can compare with today's prices. Real returns vary year to year and aren't guaranteed. You can usually access super from age 60 once you retire.

What is the super guarantee rate in 2026?
12% of your ordinary time earnings, the rate since 1 July 2025.
When can I access my super?
Generally when you reach your preservation age of 60 and retire, or when you turn 65 even if you're still working.
